長期履修制度とは，職業を有している，育児・介護等を行う必要がある，障害者である等の事情により，標準的な修業年限では卒業又は修了が困難な者に限り，所定の在学年限の範囲内で修業年限を延長し教育課程を履修することを認める制度です。
例えば，博士後期課程における標準的な修業年限は通常3年ですが，5年を修業年限として設定することができます。 入学時から5年の長期履修を認められた場合，納入する授業料総額は3年分でよく，3年分の授業料を5年で除した額を毎年納入することになります。
The long-term study system is designed for students with challenging situations that delay the completion of the course in the standard training period due to circumstances such as having a job, childcare, nursing care to a family member, and being disabled. This is a system that allows students to extend the specified period of enrollment in order to complete the requirements of the curriculum.
For example, the standard term of study for a doctoral program is usually three years, but five years can be set as the term of study. If the student is allowed to register for an extended period (five years from the time of enrollment); the total tuition to be paid will correspond to three years, and its payment will be divided in five years.
